Great Lakes Relay - What the F Were We Thinking?
by Dori Watters
That time of year has approached were we start to reflect on
what has gone on over the past year. And, I’m here to tell
you that a hell of a lot has gone on. But, one of our fondest
memories is that of a race that took place in July and started
in a little northern Michigan town, called Rogers City.
Let me start by introducing the cast of Team 69. The very
first person to agree upon Jeff and Dori’s idea of fun was
Jeff’s sister Jackie Watters. Holla! Our own John Collier
was the 2nd person to get on board and he coaxed his
college roommates and longtime friends, Jim and Joe Ryan to sign up. Soon to follow were
Matt Weber, Caleb Mitchell, Lisa Litinas and Joe Jankowski. Everyone had a different
relationship coming into the race, some strangers, some friends and some family
members. No matter what their relationships were at the beginning of the race, friends and
teammates were the only way to describe their relationships at the completion.
At 9pm on a Thursday evening, three cars packed with the team now known as TEAM 69
met at the Freeland Cottage in Rogers City. After some quick introductions, the team sat
down to figure out what how we were supposed to orchestrate 3 cars, 10 runners and a shit
load of gear across the state, all while making sure that one of our runners (Matt) wasn’t left
stranded at an exchange zone. Let me tell you trying to figure out the logistics of that race
was no easy feat. Good thing, Jackie, little miss spreadsheet herself, stepped up to the
plate. Having all the maps, directions and runner assignments filed nicely in a binder, she
began to figure out what runners needed to be in what cars to successfully get us from point
A to point B. Special props have to be given to ultra organized Matt Weber who showed up
for the pre-race meeting and with his race directions printed in full color, bound in a booklet
and tabbed for organization! Who knew???
There was a lot packed into 3 days of running madness. Let’s recap the highlights:
Day 1: John was dropped off at 6am on a remote dirt road in Northern Michigan where the
only sign that a race was going on was that there are several other people who appear to be
runners all lined up pointing in the same direction. Everyone ran 2 legs that day, except for
Joey J ( Jazz hands) who ran the only 9 mile leg of the weekend It had sand, water and the
toughest hill rating of all the legs. And to think he requested that leg???? Jackie got lost
because she doesn’t know what a “footbridge” looks like and ended up living up to her
motto, Run Til Ya Yak. Matt was happy because he had prime running conditions, 90
degree afternoon sun, dirt roads, no trees and no breeze. Perfect! Joe R ran the last leg of
the grueling day only to find out when he finished, that Team 69 was being disqualified
because 3 members of the team had jumped off the “banned” bridge and 1 member of the
team isn’t smart enough to give someone else’s team number when questioned who had
jumped from the bridge.
Day 2: Joe R and Caleb smoothed things over with BOB, the race director, and Team 69
was allowed back into the race. Jeff was up all night with the stomach flu. Maybe he should
get sick more often because he ran his fastest time of the entire weekend. Even carrying
the roll of toilet paper for frequent bathroom breaks didn’t slow him down! Jim ran 2 really
sound legs even though his ankle was sore from a little injury 6 months prior. It’s not like
having pins placed in your ankle should slow you down while running through the woods?
The boys of Team 69 passed time while waiting for their running teammates by chasing
down “Team Hottie”. Caleb ran the anchor leg into Grayling which was once again longer
than his first leg. Jackie was only trying to give him the full experience of the Great Lakes
Relay when she scheduled him to run all of the longest legs.
Day 3: Jackie and Dori started the day with headaches because they spent 4 hours the
night before trying to figure out which runner had to be in which car and at what drop off point
during the day. At this point, Team 69 was lookin a little ragged from too much running and
not much sleep! No one even looked twice when Jackie was kicked out of the moving Jeep
to start her first leg at 5:45am. Dori ran in a monsoon and had to have a muzzle over her
mouth to shut her up by the time she reached the waist high river she had to cross at the
conclusion of her first leg. John was nice enough to stand out in the pouring rain to cheer
for Dori, too bad she had already finished the leg 15 minutes prior. Lisa ran her best leg of
the entire weekend. There is nothing like seeing prisoners working out in the courtyard of
the maximum security prison on your run to light a little fire under your feet. Matt and Joe J
got kick out of a transition because they didn’t have the proper “sign” posted! Caleb had a
breakdown because his towel, aka blankie, ended up in the wrong car. Jackie, Joe J, and
John who were driving Caleb’s car at the time went to the wrong exchange zone to wait for
Dori. The reason they found out it was wrong… Joe J got ½ mile into his leg and realized
that it looked nothing like the map he was supposed to be following. Jim and Joe R couldn’
t be reached by cell phone and were found just hangin out at leg 12. Matt got left at leg 13,
luckily Jackie decided it would be best to stop at each transition into the finish to look for our
runners. Jeff ran the last leg and loved his 4 mile beach run on a slanted, sandy shoreline.
All in all it was an amazing race, with amazing scenery and amazing teammates. You better
believe Team 69 will be back in full affect for 2009 (less the bridge jump).
