Numbers on a scale, body fat percentage, body mass index and on and on… These are the things most people use to determine
how far they’ve come in their health and fitness routines. Coincidentally, they’re also the things that usually cause them to
discontinue it.

The biggest mistake people can make in beginning their fitness routine is to set unrealistic goals. They usually follow that up by
using inefficient methods for measuring their progress. Example, you’ve been on a solid schedule of workouts for two or more
weeks, only to get on the scale and see that your weight has not changed. Some people may get motivated to work even harder,
but most of us would get discouraged by the time commitment we’ve made and the lack of results for our efforts, causing us to
quit the routine. Though weight may be an issue, numbers should NOT be what dictates the success of your routine or even used
as the motivating factor in your program.

A method that I’ve grown accustomed to using with my clients and that has proven to be the most effective way to keep people
motivated to continue their program plays into a very simple fact of human nature, everyone wants to get better! Instead of letting a
scale be your barometer of progress, let your body itself be the measuring stick by choosing something, anything, to compete in.
No matter the season, there is something out there for everyone to compete in, regardless of your fitness level. Maybe it’s running
your first 5K or even doing an adventure race. It doesn’t matter. The point is to make your training revolve around a competitive
fitness goal by choosing that event. Your body then becomes its own purpose; your numbers on the scale will become a side
effect of the training you’re doing to reach the fitness level needed to complete your event. This has worked with athletes that I’ve
trained whose financial security was dependant on their performance for the NFL combine. It’s also worked for clients that had no
other goal than to improve on their once-a-month fitness test that they designed on their own. The constant with everyone who
has chosen to “compete” with themselves is that the driving factor in maintaining their enthusiasm for training is their desire to
improve.

I’m not suggesting everyone go out and try to run an ultra marathon. What I am saying is that whatever goal you choose for
yourself, make it challenging but make it obtainable. If you think you “could have done it” 10 years ago, you can do it now. For
people who are already competing at a high level, choose something completely different from what you normally compete in.
You’ll be astonished at how well the results translate into your sport of choice. The only one that can stop you from getting there is
you. Whether it be in business, fitness or life in general…it’s never too late to be what you might have been.
